State Secretary of Huffelen: "In recent days I had board discussions with the prime ministers and governors. The talks were about agreements on cooperation in the interest of residents of Curacao, Aruba, Sint Maarten.

In addition to the conversations, I have had several work visits. First an introductory meeting with all the employees at the representation of the Netherlands in Willemstad. The representation organizes and guides official work visits of Dutch authorities and delegations, advises on policy, offers assistance to Dutch people with problems. What a lively atmosphere!

Then I visited the meteorological institute and climate change platform. Curaçao is facing flooding, including heavy rainfall as a result of climate change. Drainage of purified rainwater and shelter of rainwater for example. irrigation of crops is very important.

The Curaçao government has a goal of getting 30% of its energy from sustainable sources. I asked what it takes to keep that 100%. Curaçao has plenty of natural resources suitable for this such as wind and sun.

I also visited the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity. They are responsible for the protection of natural areas, education and scientific marine research. They presented their plans, including the purchase of a former plantation at Rif St. Marie, where they want to turn it into a slavery museum.

In addition, I spoke to the local entrepreneurs of Nos Kunuku and Zen Farm. They showed me the development of innovative agriculture. I was impressed by the plans to make homegrown vegetables accessible and affordable. Easy access to European subsidies would make it a lot easier for these entrepreneurs.\n

And in conclusion, I spoke with the representatives of the countries and islands of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom about the history of slavery. Among other things, we talk about how content can be given to the recognition and processing of the slavery past".
